This section of our
journey started out from Katherine from where we travelled towards the
Kimberleys in Western Australia. Before we reached the Western Australian
Border we ventured into Gregory Nationalpark. Formerly a part of a Farming
Corporation, it became a Nationalpark in 1983. It features the Limestone
Gorge where Tufa Dams and Calcite flows can be seen which are created over
thousands of years by depositing Calcium Carbonate on rocks, tree stumps and
branches in the water. In the dry season they shine white, wheras in the wet
season algae contained in the water may give it a yellow or greenish
tint.
Bullita Homestead used to be the farmhouse in the past. It can be
visited to learn more about the history of the farming in the surrounding
countryside. From here a number of 4WD tracks lead into different parts of
Gregory Nationalpark. We choose to drive along the Humbert, Wickham and Gibbie
Tracks through the Nationalpark. Driving along the tracks was at times pretty
rough. Mainly through rocky sections in the road, and through many rocky creek
crossings, where we had to slow down to prevent our tyres to be riped into
pieces. Along the tracks we found a lonesome, rough but as well beautiful
Landscapes. From the Nationalpark we then drove onto the Buntine Highway
towards Halls Creek, where numerous picturesque Sites are worth while to be
explored.
